The state of journalism: 
Providing information not as easy as it seems

"Media" - a word with a simple denotation by a vast array of connotations. As we, the current student editors of the on-line Journal, come to the end of our year, and for some the end of our program, we have decided to study this all encompassing field. Whether the news media are respected as essential information providers to the public or despised as vultures battening on the suffering of others is irrelevant. Our intent is not to defend or condemn our chosen field of study but rather to explore its true nature. 

What is journalism? 
What is its actual role in our society? 
Further, what should its ideal role be? 
Where is the field headed? 
And, to me, most importantly: 
Why does the public perceive journalism the way it does?
